Itinerary

Departure is from our office by Tuk-Tuk at 9:00 am to the south along direct via Doiluckkam (Lao word for Gold Mountain), which is about a 35 minutes ride. The native guide knows the trail, forest, and herbal medicine; he will join this tour and guide you all the way up the mountain, and deep into the Nam Ha National Protected Area. On this path you will walk through a nice forest area, in which you may encounter or hear wild animals, birds and spot their tracks. Your guide will share some of his ancestral knowledge about the traditional use of medicinal plants, edible leaves, and show you some native skills for the hunting of wildlife. After two hours we have a traditional picnic lunch along the walking path, in the forest prepared by your guides. Thereafter, you will continue the flat and downhill path through primary forest, within the Nam Ha National Protected Area, and you will finish your trek around 3-4 pm close to Nam Ha, the Khmu Tribal village, which we will visit shortly after. The Tuk-Tuk will get you back to Luang Namtha town.

Itinerary

Day 1: Doiluckkam-The Jungle Camp. Approx. 4-5 hours.
Departure from our office by Tuk-Tuk, is roughly half an hour ride to Doiluckkam, where a local Khmu guide will join you on your journey. The first day’s pace is moderate though the Nam Ha NPA where the guide will share some of his knowledge of edible and medicinal plants. Next, You will be hiking uphill to see several massive old trees, many types of bamboo and diverse forest plants. If you travel quietly you may see some wild animals such as: monkeys, wild goats and wild pigs. Our Khmu man will prepare the traditional picnic lunch. After lunch the trek continues down from the mountain to your jungle camp, which we should reach by 4:30 pm. You spend a night near the Nam Ha River. Besides resting, you are free to go fishing for dinner with your Khmu guide, stroll around the camp or opt for a refreshing swim in the Nam Ha River close to your camp.

Day 2: The Jungle Camp-Ban Nalan-Ban Chalernsouk. Approx. 4-5 hours.
In the early morning you are likely to hear many kinds of animals communicating with one another, such as: bears, monkeys, barking deer, gibbons, wild pigs, and jungle fowl from the higher mountain tops. You might be very fortunate if you spot some moving through the forest. Before breakfast, early risers are free to take a walk around the camp. (Please, be always mindful about the dos and don’ts in these fragile cultures), ask your guide if you are not too sure what is correct). After breakfast, prepared by our guide, you’ll cross the Nam Ha River and walk through fields, next you’ll get to visit Ban Nalan, where your will learn about Khmu lifestyle, culture, and traditions.  Then there is a hike uphill through forest. Traditional lunch will be prepared en route on the forest path. Thereafter, you will have an easy two-hour hike down the mountain slope until you arrive at the Ban Chalernsouk, where your driver will be waiting for you and shuttle you back to Luang Namtha.

Trip Overview

Ban Nalan is embedded in a Community Based Tourism (CBT) zone. Early in the millennium, a New Zealand-funded UNESCO team guided a handful of trekkers along a trail to the village. The feedback from this pioneering group of paying tourists helped in designing the Ban Nalan Trek, Laos’ first CBT activity. To top it off, the United Nations recognized the trail the blazing achievement with a prestigious Development Award, and the CBT trek became a model for the pro-lowest-incomes tourism.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ban Chalernsouk-Ban Nalan. Approx. 4-5 hours.
The traditional two-day excursion, led by a local English speaking guide, starts at Ban Chaleunsouk, south of Luang Namtha town. You’ll ascend through a forest and pause on a ridge, which offers great views. The trail then descends through centuries-old trees and past an Indochina War gunnery emplacement to the Nam Ha River and Ban Nalan (Khmu Village). Dinner is often enjoyed in the company of a prominent village elder, from whom you can learn about Khmu culture. Moreover, he might offer you an insight into your own lifestyle. Remember, curiosity runs both ways, especially when sipping Lao Hai (rice wine) from a jar through bamboo straws.

Day 2: Ban Nalan-Ban Nalan Tai-Ban Namkoy-Ban Namlue. Approx. 5-6 hours.
The second day follows the Nam Ha River, through stands of large hardwood trees and bamboo patches, to Ban Nalan Tai (Khmu Village) and Ban Namkoy (Lanten Villae). The trail becomes quite challenging as it climbs under a pristine tree canopy teeming with birdlife, and ends up on a ridge with a stunning view of Luang Namtha town, visit the last village of Lanten (Ban Namlue), that is, before the final descent and a ride back to town with memories to will last you a lifetime.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ban Nam Ha-Nam Ha NPA-The Jungle Camp. Approx. 5-6 hours.
Departure is at 9:00 AM. From the office to Ban Nam Ha, a Khmu village, which is roughly 30 km from Luang Namtha town. The local Khmu guide with expertise and knowledge of the rain forest will join your on your trip and lead you through rice paddies and deep into the mountains of Nam Ha NPA. Along the trail if you are lucky and treading carefully enough, you may spot some rare birds, monkeys, and other wild animals occasionally seen. Your guide will teach you how to make bird calls, do some deer barking and mimic squirrel sounds. As you go, you will see many types of NTPs (Non Timber Forest Products) and your guides will share some of their native experience about traditional medicines. Lunch is served in the forest shade near a waterway; we will arrive in the rain forest camp late in the afternoon. Next the guides will show you how to set up a jungle camp, teach you how to cook rice in vessels made of bamboo, and how to make tea from cardamoms. You may choose to participate or just sit back and learn from them. After dinner it is bedtime in the rain forest camp.

Day 2: The Jungle Camp-Riverside Jungle Camp. Approx. 5-6 hours.
In the early morning you will many an animals scream from the higher mountain and nearly the jungle camp. The guides will encourage you to take part in the preparation of breakfast, show you how to craft simple coffee cups, bamboo toys, spoons and chopsticks from bamboo and leaves. They will also brew a medicinal tea from wild plants, collected along the way. After breakfast we trek deep into the heart of the Nam Ha NPA to explore untouched nature. Picnic lunch will be prepared en route with the natural food collected along the way such as: mushrooms, cardamoms, rattans, bamboo shoots, wild bananas stalks, etc., After lunch we continue walk toward the riverside jungle camp. On the trail the local guides will demonstrate some of their ancestral skills they use when hunting wildlife. While waiting for the guide ‘s setting up the camp, you may go for a refreshing dip into the river, try fishing, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest. (Please, no nudity or skimpy clothes). For the dinner you will enjoy with bamboo soup and medicinal tea made from wild plants.

Day 3: Riverside Jungle Camp-Ban Nalan-Luang Namtha. Approx. 5-6 hours.
After breakfast, prepared by our guide, you’ll cross the Nam Ha River and walk through fields, next you’ll get to visit Ban Nalan, where your will learn about Khmu lifestyle, culture, and traditions. Then there is a hike uphill through forest. Traditional lunch will be prepared en route on the forest path. Itinerary

Day 1: Luang Namtha-Nam Ha NPA-Ban Nam Khouy. Approx. 5-6 hours.
Departure at 9:00 AM from the office to Ban Prang (Khmu village) around 38 Km, the local Khmu guide whose expertise and knowledge of the rain forest will guarantee you safe short walk around the village, to later embark you on a hike through the verdant paddy fields, following the same path the natives, on a daily bases, use on their way to work. Then you trek deep into the heart of the Nam Ha National Protected Area (Nam Ha NPA). Your guide will explain you all about the medicinal plants you may encounter on your journey, what the natives, traditionally, have been practicing for eons in forest use and while you’re at it, spot wildlife footprints for you. Laotian native style lunch will be served nearby the river. After lunch the trek continues through the rich jungle all the way to a panoramic viewpoint, which overlooks the Nam Ha NPA territory. Thereafter, in the late afternoon, you will arrive Ban Nam Khouy, a Lahu village, which is nestled high up in the hills. While waiting dinner you may want to walk around the village, marvel at the ever-scenic sunset, appreciate the unlimited view of a mountainous skyline, and learn a thing or two about Lahu culture and traditions. After dinner lay your head to rest in the Lahu built Eco-Lodge.

Day 2: Ban Nam Khouy-Nam Ha Jungle Camp. Approx. 5-6 hours.
In the early morning you do not want to miss the sun rising from behind a range of mountainous. After sharing breakfast with your village hosts it is time for two hours of hiking through the Nam Ha NPA mountain landscape and nice jungle forest. Picnic lunch will be served en route. It is composed of some natural herbs and veggies collected along the way, such as: mushrooms, cardamoms, rattans, bamboo shoots, wild bananas, stalks, etc. We will arrive in the Nam Ha rain forest camp in the late afternoon. Next, the guides will show you how to set up a jungle camp, make bamboo vessels for cooking rice, bamboo, and tea from cardamoms. You may learn how to do it or simply sit back and watch. After dinner you’ll overnight in the rain forest camp.

Day 3: Nam Ha Jungle Camp-Ban Nalan. Approx. 5-6 hours.
In the early morning you will many an animals scream from the higher mountain and nearly the jungle camp. The guides will encourage you to take part in the preparation of breakfast, show you how to craft simple coffee cups, bamboo toys, spoons and chopsticks from bamboo and leaves. They will also brew a medicinal tea from wild plants collected along the way. After breakfast we walk on through jungle, mountains and over rivers. Lunch will be prepared in the traditional native way along the forest path. We will arrive Ban Nalan around 4:00 PM where we spend one more night in the Khmu’s Riverside Eco-Lodge. Our hosts prepare a dinner in native style, whilst you take time to swim and bathe in the river (no nudity or skimpy clothes, please). Walk around the village; talk respectfully with the ever-friendly villagers.

Day 4: Ban Nalan-Ban Namkoy-Ban Namlue. Approx. 5-6 hours.
The last day follows the Nam Ha River, through stands of large hardwood trees and bamboo patches, to Ban Nalan Tai (Khmu Village) and Ban Namkoy (Lanten Villae). Day 1: Ban Chaluernsouk-Ban Phou Varn “Akha Village”. Approx. 5-6 hours.
Departure from our office is at 9:00 AM by Tuk-Tuk. We stop for a few minutes at the morning market to purchases some food and necessary things, and then continue to the Khmu village of Ban Chaluernsouk where our trek begins. Hike deep into the Nam Ha National Protected Area. On the trail the local guides will share some of the native experience and knowledge about edible and poisonous plants, and about medicinal plants that include wild mushrooms, cardamoms, rattans, bamboo shoots, wild bananas stalks, and so on. After lunch, continue and visit waterfall, next hike to the mountaintop where you walk along through the agricultural area of the Akha people. On the mountain you will enjoy the excellent view of the Akha village amidst the dense jungle vegetation of the mountains. You will arrive at Ban Phou Varn (Akha village) around 4 PM. While your hosts and guides prepare your dinner you can either relax, help in cooking while learning about the traditional cooking cuisine, walk around the village observing traditional life, or have a beer at the local ‘shop’. After dinner you receive a massage from the Akha women, this is a treat traditionally reserved for guests in the village.

Day 2: Ban Phou Varn-Ban Nam Ha “Khmu Home stay”. Approx. 5-6 hours.
After breakfast we begin the next leg of the journey over a small path through the rainforest, which is still primary and secondary forest area. After approx. 3 hours we have our lunch break, which will be prepared by you and your guides. Thereafter another 3 hours walk along the Nam Ha Mountain and downhill to Ban Nam Ha village. That is the village where we will stay overnight and share in tourism oriented activities. You will join in and try out some activities created by a small native community that is now part of a community based tourism village and will show and teach you skills, such as: husking rice by feet or hand, a Khmu traditional Baci-ceremony, Khmu sword dance… After dinner you may want to listen to a village story from the home stay owner before you go to sleep in the Khmu traditional house.

Day 3: Ban Nam Ha-Mountain Jungle Camp. Approx. 5-6 hours.
Next morning after coffee you may see or participate in activities such as: blacksmith at work, weaving bamboo baskets or making gadgets/toys/souvenirs from bamboo, such as: birds, frogs, a simple cup, etc. Then have breakfast with the host family. Next local guide from the village will join on your trip to get you safely through rice paddies and up into the mountains of Nam Ha NPA. Along the trail you will see many types of NTPs (Non Timber Forest Products), many bird species, monkeys are occasionally spotted or heard; your guide will teach you how to make a bird call, or bark like a deer, mimic squirrel sounds. They will also share some of their ancestral knowledge and skills about traditional medicines. Lunch is eaten in the shade near the waterway, after you will arrive in the jungle camp around 4 PM.  Over there it makes for easy walking in the jungle, very near the forest camp. You will follow the trail, search for animal footprints and other elements that point to the forest wildlife present, such as: monkeys, barking deer, gibbons, wild pigs, and jungle fowl. The guide will point out interesting things and useful plants, used as herbal medicine like cardamoms, galangals. After dinner you overnight in the rain forest camp hosted by Khmu people.

Day 4: Mountain Jungle Camp-Khmu Village. Approx. 5-6 hours.
In the early morning you will many an animals scream from the higher mountain and nearly the jungle camp. The guides will encourage you to take part in the preparation of breakfast, show you how to craft simple coffee cups, bamboo toys, spoons and chopsticks from bamboo and leaves. They will also brew a medicinal tea from wild plants collected along the way. After breakfast we walk on through jungle, mountains and over rivers. Lunch will be prepared in the traditional native way along the forest path. We will arrive Ban Nalan around 4:00 PM where we spend one more night in the Khmu’s Riverside Eco-Lodge. Our hosts prepare a dinner in native style, whilst you take time to swim and bathe in the river (no nudity or skimpy clothes, please). Walk around the village; talk respectfully with the ever-friendly villagers.

Day 5: Ban Nalan-Ban Namkoy-Ban Namlue. Approx. 5-6 hours
The last day follows the Nam Ha River, through stands of large hardwood trees and bamboo patches, to Ban Nalan Tai (Khmu Village) and Ban Namkoy (Lanten Villae). Be the honored guest of an indigenous people that prides itself in preserving the old spiritual ways and traditions. After breakfast you continue to hike uphill through the mountain (more than 1,520 metres above sea level) you will get to a point see the Phou Varn villagers from the perspective of an eagle. After that climb uphill, you will certainly not take for granted the scope you get of the Nam Ha NPA. The path gradually continues up and down, through primary and secondary forest. After approx. 3 hours of trekking, you will make a stopover for a traditional Akha lunch in the forest together with your guides. Thereafter you will continue walking toward a nice primary forest. Around 4:00 PM we will call it a day and settle in the Nam Ha jungle camp. The native local guide will prepare your dinner as native at home in the jungle would do, which is: boiling water with cardamoms, making soup in bamboo vessels, etc. After dinner we go to bed in the Akha jungle camp.

Day 3: Akha Jungle Camp-Ban Nam Ha (Khmu Home stay) Appro 5-6 hours.
After breakfast continue walk on the small path through the jungle forest, mountains, rivers, primary and secondary forest. The traditional picnic lunch will be served at midday. After lunch approx. 3 hours walk along the Nam Ha Mountain and downhill to Ban Nam Ha village, where we overnight and join in tourist oriented activities. Thereafter, get the Tuk Tuk from the village to Ban Prang (Khmu village) around 10 minutes, the local Khmu guide whose expertise and knowledge of the rain forest will guarantee you safe short walk around the village, to later embark you on a hike through the verdant paddy fields, following the same path the natives, on a daily bases, use on their way to work. Then you trek deep into the heart of the Nam Ha National Protected Area (Nam Ha NPA). Your guide will explain you all about the medicinal plants you may encounter on your journey, what the natives, traditionally, have been practicing for eons in forest use and while you’re at it, spot wildlife footprints for you. Laotian native style lunch will be served nearby the river. After lunch the trek continues through the rich jungle all the way to a panoramic viewpoint, which overlooks the Nam Ha NPA territory. Thereafter, in the late afternoon, you will arrive Ban Nam Khouy, a Lahu village, which is nestled high up in the hills. While waiting dinner you may want to walk around the village, marvel at the ever-scenic sunset, appreciate the unlimited view of a mountainous skyline, and learn a thing or two about Lahu culture and traditions. After dinner lay your head to rest in the Lahu built Eco-Lodge.

Day 5: Ban Nam Khouy-Nam Ha Jungle Camp. Approx. 5-6 hours.
In the early morning you do not want to miss the sun rising from behind a range of mountainous. After sharing breakfast with your village hosts it is time for two hours of hiking through the Nam Ha NPA mountain landscape and nice jungle forest. Picnic lunch will be served en route. It is composed of some natural herbs and veggies collected along the way, such as: mushrooms, cardamoms, rattans, bamboo shoots, wild bananas, stalks, etc. We will arrive in the Nam Ha rain forest camp in the late afternoon. Next, the guides will show you how to set up a jungle camp, make bamboo vessels for cooking rice, bamboo, and tea from cardamoms. You may learn how to do it or simply sit back and watch. After dinner you’ll overnight in the rain forest camp.

Day 6: Nam Ha Jungle Camp-Ban Nalan. Approx. 5-6 hours.

The guides will encourage you to take part in the preparation of breakfast, show you how to craft simple coffee cups, bamboo toys, spoons and chopsticks from bamboo and leaves. They will also brew a medicinal tea from wild plants collected along the way. After breakfast we walk on through jungle, mountains and over rivers. Lunch will be prepared in the traditional native way along the forest path. We will arrive Ban Nalan around 4:00 PM where we spend one more night in the Khmu’s Riverside Eco-Lodge. Our hosts prepare a dinner in native style, whilst you take time to swim and bathe in the river (no nudity or skimpy clothes, please). Walk around the village; talk respectfully with the ever-friendly villagers.

Day 7: Ban Nalan-Ban Namkoy-Ban Namlue. Approx. 5-6 hours.
The last day follows the Nam Ha River, through stands of large hardwood trees and bamboo patches, to Ban Nalan Tai (Khmu Village) and Ban Namkoy (Lanten Villae). The trail becomes quite challenging as it climbs under a pristine tree canopy teeming with bird life, and ends up on a ridge with a stunning view of Luang Namtha town, visit the last village of Lanten (Ban Namlue), that is, before the final descent and a ride back to town with memories to will last you a lifetime.
