1 Day-Trekking to Phou Pha Kham Mountain

Trip Overview

Pristine forest, cliffs and nice 360′ view of Long valley, Ethnic diversity visited, Landscape, River Explore, District Protected Area

Tour ID: TK-ML-01
Start & finish: Long town “Muang Long”
Duration: 1 Day. Approximately: 5-6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult, hiking boots recommended
Activities: Trekking, Nature, Cultural Experience

Itinerary

Starting at the “cultural village” of Ban Luang Pa Kham home to the Akha people, the guide will take you on a walk, meeting local artisans and pointing out distinct ethnic traditions, while you can admire the Characteristic costumes, which are still worn by many of the women. You will visit important landmarks, as the wooden swing placed at the highest point of the village and the entrance gates, warding off evil spirits.

After this interesting tour the actual hike begins at the foot of the mountain on a narrow trail winding through a sugar cane field (where you might try the delicious taste of a freshly cut piece!) and some bamboo brush, then continuing up through pristine forest of centenarian trees, such as.. , while crossing enormous boulders. The guide will provide explanation on some characteristic trees and herbs, indicating traces of wild animals populating the area. After ascending approx. 1-1/2 hours under the refreshing shade of green the woods provide, you reach the top of the mountain. There you’ll have to climb a characteristic pile of sharp volcanic black rock, which seems to have been thrown there by a giant, to be rewarded by the fantastic 360^ view of the valley below with the town of Muang Long at it’s centre and various mountain ranges all around it.

Now the guide will find a pleasant spot under the trees for lunch, which
consists of a typical Lao style picnic with local delicacies as grilled fish, laap, pork sausage, sticky rice and vegetables all served on a tray of leaves! Somebody might want to favour the digestion with a chug of home-made herbal whisky as well.

Resuming the hike, the trail leads down the Western part of the mountain,
continuing through the beautiful untouched woods, descending for approx. 1 hour, before entering the fields around the Tai Lue village of Ban Nong Kham. You pass through a cassava grove, some rubber trees and banana plantations, before actually reaching the wealthy hamlet with a small temple, a school and some nicely designed houses. As the day nears it’s end, you’ll have a chat with the farmers busy on their vegetable fields (such as pumpkin, tomato and the local Broccoli), before crossing the Nam Ma river with a refreshing wade through the shallow waters on your way back to Muang Long.

1 Day Trekking to Huay Keo waterfalls

Trip Overview

Sequence of waterfalls, Lenten villages, pristine forest; Lanten and Lahou traditional & culture learning; Great view, Lao style picnic lunch

Tour ID: TK-ML-02
Start & finish: Long town “Muang Long”
Duration: 1 Day. Approximately: 5-6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult, hiking boots and bathing costume (Sarong for women) recommended
Activities: Trekking, Nature, Cultural Experience

Itinerary

Trekking to water falls on mountain above villages of Ban Pakha and Ban Phon Sam Pham (level medium-difficult with some steep parts and a longer walk through the Huay Keo River; hiking sandals recommended) – short description?

After pick-up at the tourism office this day tour starts with a short visit of Ban Phon Sam Phan, a “cultural village” of the Lahou people. From there the trail begins passing through some meadows, fields and a plantation of rubber trees and then ascends continuously for approx. 1 hour on a well cleared path through a forest of bamboo and other tropical trees offering some nice outlooks on the valley below.  At the top of the mountain the trail follows the ridge with stunning panoramic views on both sides onto the surrounding mountains, woods and the Muang Long valley. It then descends into a small outpost of the villagers, where a few people tend to the livestock and rice fields in the surroundings.

After another brief passage uphill the path turns left into some overgrown
bamboo groves and then descends steeply into the forest towards the Huay Keo river. The scenery is beautiful with many centenarian trees, such as Meranti and ferns, but there are some slippery portions of the path above the river to be mastered, before arriving at the lower waterfalls. In any case the effort is rewarding, as the cascades actually are 5 of various height, with the biggest towering 10 meters above a small pool, inviting visitors to an invigorating shower! Below this majestic location is the perfect viewpoint and spot for a lunch break, consisting of a Lao style picnic with local delicacies as fish laap, sticky rice and vegetables.

After this refreshment the hike continues for approx. 30 minutes walking along
and wading through some portions of the shallow river, before emerging in the
fields surrounding the village of Ban Pa Kha populated by the Lenten tribe, famous for their weaving. At the entrance of the hamlet some stone basins for the making of bamboo paper can be seen, which is one of the crafts this ethnic group is renowned for as well. After a short walk through the village, admiring the characteristic costumes and hair style of the local women a mini-van will bring you back to your guest house.
