Itinerary

Day 1: meeting at the office at 8 AM and transfer to beginning of trek, at turnoff from old mining road with pick-up truck or jeep. You start out on well cleared path up Phou Ya Kha Cotton grass) mountain, with steep climb but beautiful views on the Long valley and surrounding peaks for about 2 hours.
Once you reach the top the trail gradually descends passing high grass and some forest until the Akha village of Ban Cha Khuen Mai, where you will have lunch. This village has been founded only two years ago, after a larger settlement was forced to relocate to give way to a new dam and only some
families decided to stay in the mountains. Still you will find the typical features of traditional Akha villages, as the wooden entrance and exit gates warding off the forest spirits and the high swing meeting place for young men and women. Moreover you will meet many children enthusiastic about your visit and happy about any game you propose! Around 2.30 PM you will continue your hike, entering a beautiful bamboo forest on a narrow winding trail in the shade. After app. 2 hours you meet the beautiful river crossing below the Akha village of Ban Chong Ka, where you can take a refreshing dip, before meeting the population (at least if you prefer to bath without dozens of kids watching)! After reaching your accomodation, you can take a walk through the well-designed village with it’s stables and gardens around the bamboo houses before dinner.

Day 2: After breakfast the hike begins passing the village’s high swing and construction site for the new school, heading unto a wide dirt road, build time ago for logging. The trail goes up and down a few times, meeting the Long river with a simple wade, then gradually climbs at the mountainside for approx. 1 hour, allowing for magnificent views on the valley (might be partially substituted by trail along the rice fields). After a final descent you reach the Nam Bo sister villages of the Lahou and Hmong people, nestling on the ridge of a hill around lunch time. After refreshing yourself at the village fountain and eating lunch you can relax a while, before visiting the different neighborhoods and the local school. You might also join the children in their traditional games, as Lao style volley ball, played with the feet or gyro.

Day 3: after breakfast you start trekking at 8:30 am. Initially you walk parallel to the Nam Long River on a ridge until the water fall. The last 15 minutes before and 30 minutes after the waterfall could be a bit difficult, so better walk with a bamboo stick.. Along the way the village guide will “call” the forest birds, which can be seen in the dry season from October to May.  After an enjoyable splash in the water fall, you continue up the mountain for about 2 hours until the peak, where the guide will find a pleasant place under the trees to eat lunch. From there you walk downhill passing through banana and rubber tree plantations, enjoying a fantastic last view on the Long valley. The jeep will pick up you on the main road and you will return to the office around 5-6 PM.
