After pick-up at the tourism office this day tour starts with a short visit of Ban Phon Sam Phan, a “cultural village” of the Lahou people. From there the trail begins passing through some meadows, fields and a plantation of rubber trees and then ascends continuously for approx. 1 hour on a well cleared path through a forest of bamboo and other tropical trees offering some nice outlooks on the valley below. At the top of the mountain the trail follows the ridge with stunning panoramic views on both sides onto the surrounding mountains, woods and the Muang Long valley. It then descends into a small outpost of the villagers, where a few people tend to the livestock and rice fields in the surroundings.
After another brief passage uphill the path turns left into some overgrown
bamboo groves and then descends steeply into the forest towards the Huay Keo river. The scenery is beautiful with many centenarian trees, such as Meranti and ferns, but there are some slippery portions of the path above the river to be mastered, before arriving at the lower waterfalls. In any case the effort is rewarding, as the cascades actually are 5 of various height, with the biggest towering 10 meters above a small pool, inviting visitors to an invigorating shower! Below this majestic location is the perfect viewpoint and spot for a lunch break, consisting of a Lao style picnic with local delicacies as fish laap, sticky rice and vegetables.
After this refreshment the hike continues for approx. 30 minutes walking along
and wading through some portions of the shallow river, before emerging in the
fields surrounding the village of Ban Pa Kha populated by the Lenten tribe, famous for their weaving. At the entrance of the hamlet some stone basins for the making of bamboo paper can be seen, which is one of the crafts this ethnic group is renowned for as well. After a short walk through the village, admiring the characteristic costumes and hair style of the local women a mini-van will bring you back to your guest house.
